Eating Before, During, and After Your Workout
August 27, 2014Nutrition is an important part of any exercise routine. Whether you are playing a sport or hitting the gym, eating right before you work out will ensure that you are able to get the most out of your physical activity. Not only can the right foods boost your energy levels, a well rounded diet can also help to improve your health and physical fitness. Let’s take a look at some tips for eating before, during, and after your workout.
Before Your Workout
Before you hit the gym, it is a great idea to eat a snack that is high in healthy carbohydrates.
Carbohydrates will provide you with an energy boost, which will stay with you as you are exercising. Some great sources of healthy carbs include whole wheat toast, oatmeal, and other snacks that include whole grain ingredients.
During Your Workout
When you are exercising, you may not want to eat a full meal or snack. However, you can kick up your energy levels with a power drink or other source of electrolytes and carbohydrates. Whether you are doing a short workout or participating in an all day sporting event, it is also important to drink plenty of water as you exercise.
After Your Workout
Once you are ready to cool down from your workout, it is a great idea to refuel your body with healthy and light items. After a workout, you should choose items that are high in lean protein. For example, egg whites or chicken breast would be great ingredients for a post workout meal.
