Hockey Coach Sacco’s Snippet

Sacco’s Snippet

March is here!!!! March is here!!!

Beware the Ides of March. The what? The Ides..

What this means is the time to settle debts, in ancient Rome was March 15th, much akin to our current tax date of April 15th. Julius Caesar wasn’t so fortunate as to heed the warning he was bestowed. Fortunately for us we can enjoy the longer days and the warmer weather after such a long and cold winter here in the Northeast. I don’t want to sound like I’m really complaining because in the Hockey Business one does truly believe in the “Ides of March” due to the fact the season is ending and the playoffs begin. After playoffs comes the start or the foundation of the season to come. This is the month of renewal and the month where spring says hello after such a sleepy time hibernating while its close relative wreaks havoc on our heating bills. The lighter clothing comes out as well as the New Year’s resolution to burn off the winter pounds and get back into those clothes that cannot hide good eating. While this month offers a myriad of facts and celebrations there are a few that are near and dear to my heart. One in particular is the celebration of St.Patrick Apostle of Ireland. Now while   you don’t have to be Irish to celebrate this day, celebrate it with libation and Corned Beef and Cabbage, there is a great history of Irish-Americans who served this nation well. He was kidnapped by pirates and brought to Ireland as a slave where he spent six years before escaping and going home to Great Britain. He became a Cleric and eventually went back to Ireland to serve the people spiritually. A legend has it that he banished all snakes from Ireland into the sea.

There are other celebrations as well such as the Vernal Equinox where the Earth’s tilt is zero relative to the Sun. This in English means that the amount of daylight and darkness are equal. Which in turn translates to longer days of Sunlight, Vitamins A and D and that crabby creepy attitude of depressed-like state is going away. You going to be so much more pleasant, well, some of you anyway. Spring will officially begin March 20th, 2018 at 12:15 PM Eastern Daylight Time.

Prior to this though is the “Spring-Forward” of our time pieces on Sunday March 11th at 2:00 AM. Not only will you gain an hour of sleep, we get to laugh at those who forget and get there an hour earlier than they should have. Only kidding, it’s the lack of Sunlight talking here.

March is the third month of the year in both the Julian and Gregorian calendars. Names after Mars, the Roman god of war, who also by the way was considered the guardian of agriculture and hence the starting of the cultivation season for Farmers in the Northern Hemisphere.

Birthstones are Aquamarine and Bloodstone. Birth flower is Daffodil and the Zodiac signs are Pisces and Aries; 3/1-3/20 and 3/21 to 3/31 respectively.

Some notable observances;

  • Cerebral Palsy awareness Month
  • National nutrition Month
  • Irish-American awareness Month
  • Multiple Sclerosis awareness Month
  • Music in our schools Month
  • National athletic training Month
  • National Kidney Month
  • National take a Hockey Coach to lunch Month

Just kidding about that last one or am I? Last month I put “National buy your coach a cup of Coffee Day” and yes there was someone paying attention. An up and coming Goalie who goes by the name JR (and is only 5) was reading the February Snippet by his Mom and low and behold, He brought me a cup of Coffee and it was the best cup I have ever had! Thank you to him and his family. This is not unusual in our facility. We have some truly amazing people working there as well as amazing families and participants in various sports and activities. This is the time of the year where we begin to announce next season as well as our Summer Hockey Camps and Clinics as well as other things we offer. Check out our website for Hockey, Basketball, Soccer, Figure Skating as well as what seems like a million things to do. There is truly not one good reason to not check us out and see what all the fuss is about. And BTW our USPHL Premier Team, the NY Aviators, are in the playoffs and looking to finish stronger than strong. Free parking (shhhh) free admission to the games…

What are you waiting for!!!!

Happy spring!
